Volunteering at Sheltering Arms

Sheltering Arms Senior Services offers many opportunities to members of the community who want to make a difference in the lives of the elderly.

Of the thousands of elderly Houstonians who live alone, many are isolated and seldom receive visitors or even a phone call. Others may live with family, but suffer from Alzheimer's disease or stroke-related dementia and as a result have very limited social contact outside of the home.

Sheltering Arms’ volunteers address these needs by providing a variety of services to enhance the quality of life and safety of elders.  Our Volunteer Program has a wealth of opportunities for you to lend a helping hand. Whether you work directly with the elderly at our Adult Day Center or volunteer at one of our major events, your time and support will go miles toward making a difference.

A Volunteer's Story: "Once again, thank you for providing us the opportunity to reach out and not only touch but also make new friends through these ramp projects." - Brent Rager recipient of The Mayor's Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service.

Volunteer Opportunities

Sheltering Arms offers opportunities for individuals, families, friends, school groups and companies to volunteer with Sheltering Arms in a variety of ways.

Telephone Reassurance

Volunteers provide a daily safety call to seniors living alone. If the phone call is unanswered, an emergency procedure is implemented to check on the client’s safety and to send help if necessary. Safety calls are made Monday through Friday with each call lasting three to five minutes.

Telephone Reassurance is a great volunteer opportunity for those who have a busy schedule or are unable to get away from the house: Your calls can be made any time of the day you designate to fit your schedule. You can reach out and volunteer from the comfort of your own home!

To become a volunteer for the Telephone Reassurance Program, complete an application on our website. You will then receive an invitation to attend an upcoming training session that will last approximately one hour.

Day Center Activities Assist with programs, activities, and operations of the Center such as reading, arts and crafts, gardening, exercise, and entertainment.
Senior Home Repairs Help with much needed repairs such as cutting grass, raking leaves, planting flowers, painting, and mending fences.
Birthday Club Select a month to make phone calls or send birthday cards to seniors with birthdays in that month. For many seniors this is the only birthday wish they will receive.
Gift Baskets Create and deliver gift baskets to homebound and / or low-income seniors. Baskets are composed of basic necessities such as toiletry items, cleaning supplies, and nonperishable food.
Holiday and Birthday Celebrations Host holiday or birthday parties for a client in the Sheltering Arms dementia care Day Center. Provide activities, refreshments…and fun!
Talent Show-Off Showcase your talents to senior clients in the Day Center. Seniors can judge groups and give out awards for the best talent showcase.
Create Your Own Opportunity! Volunteers can choose to volunteer for any of the programs listed, or we can create a custom volunteer program that meets our clients’ needs and yours or your organization. Just talk to our volunteer manager to learn how you or your group can volunteer.
