Community Research
Community input was instrumental in Care for Elders’ planning and priority-setting processes and included phone and written surveys, a Consumer Advisory Council and 29 stakeholder meetings.
Mathematica Policy Research, commissioned by RWJF, conducted a phone survey of 455 Harris County residents over age 50 and found that older residents of Harris County are:
- Less likely to know about the availability of long-term care services than are older residents of the other grantee communities. Twenty-one percent (21%) of those surveyed reported not knowing where to turn for information about long term care services.
- More likely to have unmet needs for help with daily living tasks
- More likely to have been unable to meet basic expenses in the past year.
With support from several Care for Elders partners, 416 supplemental written surveys were conducted with special population groups underrepresented in the telephone surveys and found:
- While two-thirds of caregivers surveyed reported getting some relief, or a break, from their elder care responsibilities, 59% indicated that the relief was not enough.
- The emotional stress of caregiving creates a greater hardship for those with elder care responsibilities than does the financial stress.
To ensure input and feedback from older adults and caregivers throughout the partnership’s planning process, a Consumer Advisory Council, with representation from all major ethnic and socioeconomic groups, was created. And, a total of 753 individuals participated in 29 stakeholder meetings to provide input and recommendations about the partnership’s priorities.
